Following the success of the previous installment in 2010, i Light Marina Bay Festival 2012 is back for the second time in Singapore and it is Asia’s first and only sustainable light art festival! Opening on the 9th March 2012 till 1st April 2012, visitors can expect 31 innovative and dynamic artworks by artists and designers from 17 countries and territories inclusive of our very own students from LASALLE College of the Arts and School of the Arts.
This year’s theme of the festival is “Light Meets Asia” and 22 of the artworks are created by artists and designers based in Asia. The artworks on display this year will create a visual feast that will inspire and capture the imagination of the visitors as well as to emphasize the importance of using energy-efficient lighting technology.
In conjunction of this sustainable light festival, the campaign “Switch Off, Turn Up” will be launched to encourage buildings across Singapore to drive energy efficiency. From my understanding, this year 44 buildings (up from 16 properties in 2010) besides those in the Marina Bay area have committed to consciously switch off non-essential indoor and outdoor lighting and office equipment when possible. They will also turn up air-conditioning temperatures to a comfortable 24 to 25 degrees during office hours.
I was at Marina Bay a few days ago to check out some of the set-up for i Light Marina Bay Festival 2012. Over here, the magnificent Garden of Light is by Singapore company, Hexogon Solution. Looks like it will be a challenge to set this up as it will be the largest 3D mapping in Singapore ever on a building. Don’t forget your cameras when you visit i Light!
Over here, this sphere is known as the Parmenides I by American artist Dev Harlan is going to be an interesting one as it will be incorporating a 360-degree digitally-mapped video projection. This artwork will be on display under the seating gallery of The Float.
The workers from Pico are working hard overtime to put this artwork, Sweet Home together. This piece of work is by Sweden artist, Aleksandra Stratimirovic and it will be under the seating gallery of The Float too. Why not come by and chill with your family and friends under these huge lamps that creates a homely atmosphere in an urban setting?
At the front of The Float platform, Immersion seems all ready to be lit up. Created by Australian duo, Martin Bevz and Kathryn Clifton, this installation will be popular with children at the LED lights will changes in glow with the movement around it.
Besides all these energy-efficient art displays, there will be also be entertaining performances, workshops and competitions throughout the 3-week-long event. This is to encourage people to think of creative approaches that they can adopt to live a more sustainable lifestyle. Earth Day 2012 will also be happening on the 31st March from 8.30-9.30pm where visitors will witness Marina Bay switching off the lights for 1 hour. Mark your calendars on the 31st March now and also join in the fun for the Pets N The City event along with the NESCAFE-PAssion Movie Night and Mass Light Catcher Creation!
i Light Marina Bay will open nightly from 7.30pm to 11.00pm from 9 March to 1 April 2012. Visitors can easily commute to and from the festival grounds via the new Bayfront MRT station as well as Esplanade, Raffles Place and Marina Bay stations. You can also experience the i Light festival from water with Duck Tours and river taxis. For more information, please visit http://www.ilightmarinabay.sg.
